Grand Theft Auto VI comes out on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on the same day, November 19, 2026, at the same price. The story, the map and both editions are identical. So the right choice mostly comes down to the console you already own and where your friends play.
If you're choosing from scratch, these are the differences that actually matter.
The quick answer
- Already own one? Buy it there. Both versions get the same game and the same editions.
- Your friends all play on one platform? Pick that one, especially if you'll want to play GTA Online with them later.
- Buying a console for GTA 6? A PS5 or Xbox Series X gives the full experience. The Series S is cheaper but has less storage and lower resolution.
What's the same on both
- Release date and time: midnight local time on November 19, per Rockstar.
- Editions and prices: Standard ($79.99) and Ultimate ($99.99) in the US, on both.
- Pre-order bonus: the Vintage Vice City Pack, plus a month of GTA+ on digital pre-orders.
- Boxed copies: on both consoles the box holds a download code, not a disc.
Where they differ
Pre-load timing. PS5 pre-loads open at midnight local time on November 10. Xbox pre-loads open at midnight GMT on November 10, which is the evening of November 9 in the Americas. Xbox players in the US get a head start.
Code region locks. Rockstar says PlayStation codes are region-locked: a code only works on an account from the matching region, such as North America or the UK. Xbox codes aren't region-locked. If you buy a boxed code from abroad or as a gift, Xbox is more forgiving.
Storage. The download is up to 212 GB. A launch PS5 has about 667 GB usable, a Series X about 800 GB and a Series S only about 364 GB, so GTA 6 could fill most of a Series S on its own.
Performance. Rockstar hasn't published resolution or frame-rate figures for any console. Analysis of the trailers points to 30 frames per second on every console, and the Series S is widely expected to run at a lower resolution than the others. Rockstar hasn't confirmed a 60 fps mode, including on PS5 Pro.
Which is best?
- PS5 or PS5 Pro: a safe pick with lots of storage. Watch out for region-locked codes if you buy from abroad.
- Xbox Series X: equal to a base PS5 on paper, with the earliest pre-load in the Americas and codes that work anywhere.
- Xbox Series S: the cheapest way to play, but plan for less space and a softer picture, and consider expanding its storage.
Can you switch later?
Not for free. Purchases stay on the platform you bought them on, and there's no cross-buy between PlayStation and Xbox. Rockstar hasn't said whether your progress will carry across platforms, so pick the console you'll stick with.
