You can download Grand Theft Auto VI before it comes out, so it's ready to play the moment it unlocks on November 19, 2026. Pre-loading opens nine days earlier, on November 10. Here's exactly how it works on each console.
When pre-loading starts
Rockstar's support page, updated November 3, gives two different start times:
- PlayStation 5: November 10 at midnight local time in your time zone.
- Xbox Series X|S: November 10 at midnight GMT, the same moment worldwide. That's 7 PM Eastern and 4 PM Pacific on November 9 in the US.
So Xbox players in the Americas can start downloading the evening before PS5 players can.
November 10 or November 12?
You may still see November 12 in older articles and listings. Since November 3, every official Rockstar page gives the same answer:
- Rockstar Newswire (November 3): digital pre-load on November 10. Boxed (code-in-box) copies reach retailers from November 12.
- Rockstar Support, Pre-Load FAQ (updated November 3): November 10 on both consoles.
- Rockstar Support, regional release times (updated November 3): November 10 on both consoles.
- Rockstar Store: "Pre-load begins November 10, 2026."
So November 10 is when digital pre-loading opens, and November 12 is when boxed codes reach shops.
How big is the download?
Rockstar puts the download at up to 212 GB, with the exact size varying by console. That's one of the biggest console downloads ever, so check your free space now.
Rough usable storage on each console out of the box:
- PS5 and PS5 Digital (825 GB): about 667 GB usable.
- PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro (1 TB or more): about 840 GB usable or more.
- Xbox Series X (1 TB): about 800 GB usable.
- Xbox Series S (512 GB): about 364 GB usable, so GTA 6 alone could take more than half of it.
Leave room for a day-one update on top of the pre-load. Clearing about 250 GB is a sensible target.
Who can pre-load?
- Digital pre-orders can pre-load as soon as it opens.
- Boxed copies contain a download code, not a disc. They're expected at retailers from November 12, and you can pre-load as soon as you redeem the code.
- Buying on launch day works too, but you'll be waiting for a 200 GB download while everyone else is playing.
How to pre-load on PS5
- Pre-order GTA 6 in the PlayStation Store, or redeem your code under Redeem code.
- Open the game's tile in your library. The download starts automatically if automatic downloads are on; otherwise choose Download.
- Keep the console in rest mode with Stay connected to the internet turned on, so the download finishes overnight.
How to pre-load on Xbox Series X|S
- Pre-order in the Microsoft Store, or redeem your code.
- Open the game's page from My games & apps or the Microsoft Store and choose Install.
- Set Power mode to Sleep (previously instant-on) so updates install while you're away.
What pre-loading doesn't do
Pre-loading downloads the game early. You still can't play until it unlocks at midnight local time on November 19. It also doesn't change your edition: you can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade before or after launch.
Console storage figures are approximate and depend on your system software.
